War Poetry

This term is all about the poetry of war. From the trenches of World War One to the burning heights of the Twin Towers, this unit explores facets of war both of the past and of today. Poetry is a lens to help us view the world and the emotions of others. It gives writers the ability to condense extremely complex emotions and concepts through the use of poetic language and structure. We will be exploring not only the meaning and context of this poetry, but also the ways in which poets use language and structure to create particular effects.

In Year 10, you will be studying an anthology of poetry entitled ‘Power and Conflict’. This booklet will give you a great foundation before beginning your GCSE course.

Term 5

This term you are going to be exploring how people fight for their freedom and learning how to analyse texts. During your three hours of English per week you should:

  1. Complete three lessons in your booklet (per week)
  2. Use your term 5 knowledge organiser to learn and revisit key concepts and vocabulary. Make sure that you are testing yourself regularly.
  3. Use your knowledge organisers from earlier in the year to revise key concepts and vocabulary. It is important that you do not forget what you have already learnt.

READING- You should be aiming for a MINIMUM of 30 minutes of reading per day. Mrs Sherry has uploaded a number of ways that you can access texts if you are running low at home.

Reading is one of the most important things you can do whilst you are at home. It will:

  1. Help you to relax and reduce anxiety
  2. Widen your vocabulary
  3. Help with the accuracy of your writing
  4. Broaden your imagination
  5. Keep you entertained!

  3. Students should then attempt the cumulative assessments, see link below.

Year 9

Please complete your cumulative assessment again. You can then use your knowledge organiser to secure your understanding of any elements that you have forgotten or are not sure of.
