Bach to the Future On Monday 19th February all Year 7 students had an extended assembly delivered by Kent Music School. Entitled Bach to the Future, the roadshow aimed to give students the opportunity to learn about and hear some orchestral instruments being played. Graham and Colin, who delivered the assembly, brought with them a clarinet, a saxophone, a trumpet and a trombone, which they used to play a variety of popular classical, pop and film music pieces. Students learnt about the instrument family they belong to, how sound is created on each instrument (using a hosepipe, a funnel and a straw!) and were able to hear the range of notes each can play. They also watched videos of the string and percussion families. In term 5 all year 7 students will begin a unit of work about the instruments of the orchestra, and it is hoped through this, and with the assembly, students will be encouraged to consider taking up a musical instrument and having lessons in school. We currently offer lessons on Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Cornet, Trumpet, Drum Kit, Guitar (acoustic, electric and bass), Ukulele, Mandolin, Piano and Voice. Information for these lessons along with videos from the teachers is available in the Student area of the school website, in the Extra Curricular section https://www.themallingschool.kent.sch.uk/page/?title=Extra%2DCurricular&pid=66 or from Miss Cox.
Another Win! Yesterday, our U16 girls played in their final league fixture. Throughout the year they have showed such determination and resilience to come back and keep fighting, even after conceding goals. The final score today was a 6-1-win goals coming from Summer Cheeseman (3), Isabelle Thatcher (1), and Ava Miller (2). A special mention to Daisy Lloyd for playing up a couple of years in our last few fixtures and absolutely keeping us in some challenging games!
Our fantastic Community Volunteers were out in force again this week, along with Mr Ryder. As always we are very proud of their efforts and enthusiasm.
Our fantastic woodwind teacher, Lindsay Edmondson, is running the Orchestra One course over half term in Ashford. Open to all students in Kent aged 11-18 the course is about experiencing making music in an ensemble. With funding from Kent Music School, Lindsay has been able to buy some amazing music technology equipment, which she will be teaching students to use as part of the course. This includes a synthesiser that is played using bananas!!! If you are interested, click the link below.
On Monday Mr Maisey escorted our sixth form Debating Society to participate in the Oxford University Southeast Regional Mass Debate Competition. We were the only state comprehensive school participating in the contest that was made up of over 30 schools from the region. The students were magnificent in debating issues such as girls' education and salary caps in sport. They showed great courage competing against three extremely experienced teams in what was , for some, their debut competition. Two of our more experienced students took on all challengers in a fiery debate about the welfare state. All of our students were extremely competitive and went on to receive extremely encouraging feedback from the judges. We are very proud of them all.
On Tuesday 16th January year 9 students were joined by year 12 vocational students in the hall to listen to a presentation from Reform Restore Respect.
