Science

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less ”.

Marie Curie

Department Vision Statement/ Curriculum Intent

At the Malling School we designed a science curriculum to encourage the curiosity of all students, to develop a deep knowledge to appreciate the natural world and prepare them for whatever future they choose to pursue. The aim of our 5-year curriculum is to develop critical thinkers with the ability to recognise fact from misinformation and allow them to make informed decisions.  Students will learn about the fundamental laws that govern how the universe exists, how atomic structure and bonding can explain the properties of all materials, and how appreciating the fine balance between organisms, their environment & Earth’s resources is necessary to understand the impact we have on the climate and natural world.  Science offers the best explanation for our experience of the world around us and our aim is to foster the students’ enthusiasm to understand so they can all find their Eureka moment.

The science teachers at The Malling School are committed to sharing their passion for their subject by linking to the latest scientific news.

As Carl Sagan observed, “Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge”.  In addition to the scientific content of our programme, we teach our students that science is a process, rather than an answer.  We encourage our students to reflect on their mistakes and misconceptions as the starting points for progress on their learning journey.

The science curriculum at The Malling School is a 5-year, spiralled curriculum which allows students to revisit material and deepen their knowledge and understanding of each concept. Ensuring that we teach to the top for all and scaffold to meet individual needs so they can engage with their science experience.

All students will either complete the Edexcel Combined Science course or Edexcel Separate Science course, assessed at the end of Year 11.  Either of these routes allow students to pursue a variety of science qualifications and careers after Year 11.
