Department Vision Statement/ Curriculum Intent

Confidence – At The Malling School we pride ourselves on assisting students to build their confidence in speaking in front of others through Drama lessons. Every job requires a level of social interaction be it a fast food employee or a CEO of a company Drama helps build thee skills. Our lessons allow all students to participate and to take the steps in building confidence through working with others, sharing ideas and setting great examples.

Co-Operation – Teamwork is a natural part of Drama and at The Malling School students are given to chance to work with a variety of people throughout their lessons. This allows students to support each other, share ideas and for some to assume the position of director or leader. Our lessons are based upon mutual respect and joint participation meaning that students quickly feel comfortable and confident in what they are producing. Groups are often changed and are selected by staff to allow students to work with as wide a selection of people as possible.

Creativity – At the heart of our curriculum is creativity. Every year group has the opportunity to create their own performances from set stimulus and offers a chance for students to showcase and develop ideas within a safe environment. Our students are challenged to think outside the box, to research existing techniques and skills and incorporate them into their own performances. Drama at The Malling School is more than performing and reading it is a way to stretch the imagination and the only limit it the one students set themselves.

Greek Theatre

WHY

An introduction to performance and theatre through the Greek myth of Antigone, building up the skills and confidence to perform using Drama techniques such as Tableaux, Chorus and Mime.

Devised Theatre
WHY?

An exploration of creating theatre using a variety of stimulus such as poems, songs and pictures. Students will also learn about the different types of staging they could use to perform on.

The Lion King
WHY?

Students will use the musical of The Lion King to research the many jobs and roles that go into putting on a West End performance. Set, mask and costume design will be used to explore the themes of this musical as well as performing specific acting scenes

Frankenstein
WHY?

Students will receive an overview of the plot but will focus their attention on the opening scene of this play. Working in pairs they will learning about staging, movement and emotions to bring this scene to life.

Acting Styles
WHY?

A journey through a variety of Acting Styles such as Physical Theatre, Musical Theatre, Theatre in Education and more. Students will focus on a specific style each week and work with a group to create a performance in that style.

WHY?

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
WHY

An opportunity to explore, rehearse and develop a scene from Tom Stoppard’s play. Students will work in pairs to stage a scene, improving each lesson and adding in movement as well as learning the lines to enable them to show a finished piece at the end of term 2.

Comedy
WHY?

A brief exploration of comedy from silent comedy, to slapstick and through to a scripted scene from Fawlty Towers. Students will gain use a variety of dramatic techniques to fully realise their performance off script.

WHY?

Year 10 - KS4 - Exam Board Pearson

TOPIC

Monologues

WHY?

An introductory unit to BTEC Performing Arts Acting. This unit is designed to ensure students are able to tackle all the challenges the course will offer. Each week students will perform a monologue to the class ranging from Shakespeare to modern texts. Each student will then receive an individual monologue for them to explore the character, staging and emotions before performing to the class off script.

Practise

WHY
An opportunity to practise for the ‘exam’ unit of BTEC Performing Arts. Students will receive a brief asking them to create a performance with a specific stimulus for a target audience. Students will work together to devise, stage, rehearse and add technical aspects to their performance.

Year 11 - KS4 - Exam Board Pearson

TOPIC

Unit 2
Developing Skills

WHY?

Students are placed into small groups and given a text to research, explore and develop into a staged performance. In order to demonstrate their understanding of the style of performance students will then create the next scene and complete the text using the same characters, style and speech patterns as in the original.

This unit also requires a log book detailing rehearsals, character exploration and a diary of improvements.

TOPIC

Unit 3
Responding to a Brief

WHY

BTEC send out a Brief to students requiring them to create a performance from a set stimulus for a specific audience. Students are expected to complete three written logs under supervision throughout the unit showing their initial ideas for the performance, the skills they have used and how they are developing and finally an evaluation of their final performance.
