Knowledge of languages is the doorway to wisdom ".

Department Vision Statement/ Curriculum Intent

Intent: Character Development and Identity

At The Malling School we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social, and cultural experience for our pupils. Studies have demonstrated that language and linguistics exposure are essential tools for character development both mentally, psychologically, socially and emotionally. The study of a language is seen as an important part of our pupils’ education as languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Our aim is to enrich our pupils’ experiences and broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world around them, and their place in it.

Implementation: Making Progress, Resilience and High Expectations

At The Malling School we teach both French and Spanish as our languages of choice. The MFL curriculum aims to make the learning of French an enjoyable experience and to prepare pupils by helping them to develop language-learning skills. Throughout KS3 and KS4 the MFL curriculum seeks to develop pupils’ ability to communicate confidently and coherently in the target language in speech and writing, conveying what they want to say with increasing accuracy; to express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently; to read and to listen to and understand clearly articulated standard speech at near normal and normal speed.

Impact: Taking Pride and Good Values

Pupils are encouraged to understand how language works and how to respond to a wide range of spoken and written materials. We believe in creating an environment where pupils are given every opportunity to use the target language and become real linguists.
