Science

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less ”.

Marie Curie

Department Vision Statement/ Curriculum Intent

At The Malling School, we believe the purpose of education is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset they need to thrive in employment, further study, and life-long learning. The Science Department is dedicated to delivering an ambitious and academically rigorous curriculum that fosters a deep understanding of scientific concepts, cultivates curiosity, and inspires appreciation for the natural world.

We recognise science as the most powerful tool we have for making sense of the world around us. As Carl Sagan once said, “Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge.” Guided by this principle, we aim not only to teach scientific facts but to develop scientific thinkers, young people who question, investigate, communicate clearly, and reflect.

Clear communication is central to science. Students must be able to explain ideas, interpret evidence and justify conclusions. We believe these are essential skills not only for success in science, but also for employment, further study, and life beyond school.

Our five-year, spiralled curriculum is designed to revisit and deepen core concepts over time, enabling all students to build secure understanding and meaningful connections across topics. We teach to the top for every learner, while providing tailored support to ensure that every student is challenged and enabled to succeed.

Through our own passion for science, we model intellectual curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to progress. We encourage students to view mistakes not as failures but as valuable opportunities for learning. By nurturing these habits, we prepare our students to engage thoughtfully with the scientific, social, and ethical challenges of the future, whatever path they choose to take.
