Why Careers in the Curriculum?

At The Malling School, we believe that careers education is most effective when it is embedded throughout a student's learning journey rather than delivered as a series of standalone events. By helping students understand the relevance of their subjects to future education, training and employment, we encourage them to develop ambition, raise aspirations and make informed decisions about their next steps. Our aim is to equip every student with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in an ever-changing world of work and to become adaptable, lifelong learners.

Careers in the Curriculum

At The Malling School, we recognise the important role that curriculum learning plays in helping students understand the relevance of their education to future careers. Our ambition is to further strengthen the links between subjects and the world of work, enabling students to recognise how the knowledge and skills they develop in lessons can support a wide range of education, training and employment pathways.

As part of this commitment, we are continuing to work with subject leaders and teaching staff to identify opportunities to embed careers learning within the curriculum. Throughout the year, Careers in the Spotlight assemblies introduce students to a range of employment sectors, employers, technical pathways, apprenticeships and higher education opportunities, broadening their awareness of future possibilities. Careers education is also delivered through our Period 1 programme, where students participate in planned activities that develop employability skills, explore labour market information and support informed decision-making at key transition points.

To support colleagues in embedding careers learning, resources, labour market information and teaching materials are shared through the school's shared drive and Unifrog. We also value regular staff feedback and collaboration, using staff voice to share effective practice, identify new opportunities and inform the ongoing development of careers education across the curriculum. As our programme continues to develop, we will work closely with curriculum areas to ensure that meaningful careers learning becomes an increasingly integral part of every student's educational experience.

What is a Gatsby Benchmark?

In our careers work we are governed by a set of standards called Gatsby Benchmarks. There are 8 of these and we work incredibly hard at The Malling School in order to meet these standards and even go above and beyond. Gatsby Benchmark 4 is a particular area in which teaching staff can help us to excel. This benchmark requires, “all teachers to link curriculum learning with careers”
