Department Vision Statement/ Curriculum Intent

Health and Social Care equips students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to understand and support individuals across all life stages. The purpose of the subject is to inspire students who are interested in working within the health and social care sector to understand how to provide high-quality, non-discriminatory care that meets the diverse needs of individuals in society.

Through the study of Health and Social Care, students learn how effective care is planned and delivered. They develop an understanding of the life stages from infancy to later adulthood and the expected patterns of development within each stage. Students explore the core values, skills and attributes that underpin good care practice, such as respect, empathy and confidentiality, and learn how these support individuals’ physical, intellectual, emotional and social wellbeing. They also gain insight into health indicators, enabling them to recognise what good health looks like and how it can be measured and promoted.

Health and Social Care develops students’ analytical and applied skills. Students learn to analyse case studies, identify individuals’ needs, and make clear links between factors affecting health and wellbeing, the needs that arise from these factors, and the care and support provision required. This ensures students are well prepared for further study, training or employment within the health and social care sector, and able to apply their learning to real-life care contexts with confidence and professionalism.
