Welcome back

Dear Parents and Carers

We are very much looking forward to welcoming back our students next week. To support students and staff adapt to their new timetables and our site arrangements we have a staggered return to welcome back year groups as detailed below:

  • Wednesday 2nd September Year 7 only (Year 12 from 14:00)
  • Thursday 3rd September Year 7,8,11,12 & 13 only
  • Friday 4th September Full School Return

We understand that some students may be anxious about returning to school, which is completely normal. Please reassure them that we are very much looking forward to welcoming them back into our school community. Every year group will have an assembly on their first day back so we can ensure they fully understand our systems and feel confident in their new routines.

I am extremely proud of our students who have demonstrated the Malling School Way with courage and resilience throughout these challenging times. I very much look forward to welcoming them back personally as we start our new academic year together.

Thanks again for your ongoing support and kind messages for our wonderful staff. They are truly appreciated.

Mr Vennart

The Malling School improves on its success

The Malling School has improved on the success of last year with some amazing results across the board. These unprecedented times have created challenges for students and teachers alike, but the continued dedication of all involved has meant that students are able to celebrate their GCSE results and continue in the educational journey. All students have secured a meaningful destination to continue their studies, with the TMS Sixth Form being over-subscribed for the first time.

Although the GCSE results have been awarded in a different way this year, the students at TMS benefited from completing a full round of mock examinations for all subjects just before lockdown. Completed in exactly the same conditions that they would have faced in the official exams, the school were able to calculate grades with a high degree of accuracy. Students worked incredibly hard up until the school was forced to close and even continued working remotely until the news that exams were cancelled. This means that students are well placed to continue their studies or training from September.

Sixth Form students at The Malling School have continued to do well this year and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has produced excellent results across the board. The highest performing subjects include Psychology, History, Maths and Film and these subjects all achieved above the global average for the subject. All other subjects achieved well and achieved positive value added scores, including BTEC Sport, Applied Science, the Extended Project Qualification, IB Biology, IB English, and BTEC Health & Social Care.
A number of students achieved top grades in a range of IB subjects and have secured places at universities including Canterbury Christchurch University and the University of Kent.

The Malling School Way

The Malling School Way is the foundation of our school and something that we are extremely proud of. Through our planned Personal Development Curriculum, Great Teaching Model and Positive Behaviour Support we teach our students about what The Malling School Way means:

It means being kind and respectful to other pupils around you.
It means being punctual and taking pride in your work.
It means taking pride in your appearance and always looking smart.
It means being polite and always saying good morning or good afternoon, smiling at others and holding doors open for others.
It means always doing your best.
It means always making progress, working as a team, being loyal and being supported to be successful.
It means demonstrating high standards and being the best person you can be in every lesson, every day.
It means having good values and developing physically and mentally and not just about getting good grades but becoming a better person.
It means being a risk taker, taking pride in our school and being confident.
It means taking on challenges and learning from your mistakes so that you can become a better person.
It means thinking about other people and always being considerate.
It means having high expectations of yourself and high expectations of the school.

We invite you to visit and would be delighted to show you around so that you can see The Malling School Way for yourself.

The Malling School Update Term 6 Monday 1st June

Dear Parents and Carers

As we formally start our new term, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on our plans for Term 6.

Year 10 and Year 12 Students Return to School

Our plans for face-to-face support for our Year 10 and Year 12 students is a staged approach to supplement and strengthen our Home Learning provision which remains the predominant mode of education. Our first stage will be to invite a small number of Year 10 and Year 12 students who are not successfully accessing Home Learning. These students will be personally invited into TMS from June 15th for a fortnight of intensive support to help them access and catch up with their studies. Further guidance on our plans for face-to-face support will be sent out to Year 10 and Year 12 parents and carers this week.

Term 6 Home Learning Overview

From the beginning of term 6, we will be continuing our schedule of home learning, with some developments to ensure this is as effective as possible. Students will now access their learning through Microsoft Teams. This has been introduced to students through their lessons in term 5, including ‘how to’ tutorials and walkthroughs in some subject areas. The ‘Home Learning’ tab on the website has links to Teams, as well as displaying the weekly timetables for all year groups. A key change to the timetable is that they now display when live Zoom lessons will be. This will enable students to plan their time more effectively and know when to expect email invitations to these live lessons.

Term 6 Cumulative Assessments

Students will be completing online assessments over the next week. The results of these assessments will be used by teachers to adjust their teaching accordingly so that misconceptions can be addressed, and provision made for students who have struggled. Please reassure your child that these assessments are nothing to worry about and first and foremost, we are using them to evaluate the impact of home learning and to help close gaps in understanding.

Thank you again for your continued support

Take care

Mr Vennart

The Malling School Update: Friday 22nd May

Dear Parents and Carers

I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents, carers and students for their continued support and positive messages for our dedicated staff they are truly appreciated.

Term 6 Update

From recent government updates it appears clear that secondary schools will remain closed for the majority of students over the coming months. Thank you again for your understanding and cooperation during these challenging and frustrating times in supporting our home learning provision whilst juggling work and family commitments. We are awaiting the detailed government guidance for secondary schools published over half term before we finalise the careful plans we are making for some face to face academic support of year 10 and 12 students, alongside the full time provision we are offering to priority groups. We would like to reassure parents that safety of our students and staff and providing excellent academic and pastoral support is always at the forefront of our planning.

Home Learning

Our key priority at TMS continues to be providing high quality teaching, pastoral support and personal development remotely for all our students. Many thanks to all parents and carers for completing our Home Learning Survey. Please see a summary of responses below:

  • 98% of parents and carers agree that TMS is keeping their child well informed of Home Learning expectations and communicating well.
  • 97% of parents and carers agree TMS is responding well to their child’s concerns.
  • 99% of parents and carers agree that TMS is supporting Home Learning.

We had some very constructive feedback from our parents and as a result are making the following changes to our Home Learning as we move into Term 6.

  • We are increasing the frequency of live lessons, sending invites through 24 hours in advance.
  • We will pre-publish a timetable of live lessons to support our students with their organisation.
  • All year 10 students will have supportive daily remote briefings with Senior Leaders.

End of Term 5 Assembly

Our Term 5 Gallery of Excellence video included in our assembly demonstrates the incredible hard work, commitment and dedication shown by our students. We are extremely proud of all our students, who in these unusual circumstances remain committed to The Malling School Way, well done to you all. Our assembly will be posted on our website and facebook for students, parents and carers to view.

I wish you all a restful and enjoyable half term

take care

Mr Vennart
